The main concept of the Layer Chair was to accentuate the form of the chair with plywood, the curves indicating how the form changes. The plywood was also utilized because it allows for complex curves without weak points, and could be cut from one sheet, making the chair more amenable vto mass manufacture.
Production Process: I always start with sketches, but I very quickly move in to model making to get a feel for the construction of a new chair design. In this case I started with the concept of multiple planes supporting the sitter, and worked out how the structure would enable that sitting surface. From there I refined the idea and built a life-size, adjustable jig to get the sitting angle and height correct.
